Friday Starter – Blaseball is back and samer than ever

Blaseball is indeed back

As mentioned here earlier, Blaseball is back. Blaseball is a browser-based game-like experience where you can watch simulated scoreboards of a fictional baseball league in real-time. You can also bet on the games (no real money involved) and use your bet winnings to vote on changes to the league.

The actual in-browser experience is pretty minimal, and so far, the relaunch appears to be only a touch nicer-looking than the old Blaseball and without any obvious major new features. But the community is huge and active, making fan art and fan fiction for the game, and the official Discord is always full of people excitedly chattering about the latest goings-on, which can include things like new players suddenly burping out of the vortex into the field of play.

I think I would absolutely love this stuff if the UI were closer to MLB Gameday or OOTP Baseball rather than a basic scoreboard graphic and a little bit of text. So the re-design and relaunch has disappointed me a little, but a phone app is on the way soon, and I’ll be keeping tabs on the new seasons of Blaseball to see what they come up with next.

Digital Scouting Report on the way

Shintaro Fujinami signed with the Oakland Athletics, so I have another Digital Scouting Report to make next week. This is a series where I record footage from Pro Yakyuu Spirits and Powerful Pro Yakyuu games featuring a player coming over to MLB from NPB and translate their statistics in-game to get a better sense of their strengths and weaknesses.

My previous entries this offseason were on Kodai Senga and Masataka Yoshida. And last year I did one for Seiya Suzuki.
