The Speedrunning Shiba Inu
Peanut Butter the Shiba Inu was the star of this year’s Summer Games Done Quick, with the headliner event being a “win a game” speedrun of Ken Griffey Jr. Presents Major League Baseball for the Super Nintendo.
JSR_ and Crispy designed the dog controller used for this event. With what must be a mountain’s worth of kibble, they coached Peanut Butter into hitting specific buttons at specific times to play the game. Using the Seattle Mariners (with Griffey plus a roster full of names chosen from GDQ donations), their task was to win a single game as quickly as possible.
I don’t want to say too much about what happened, since it’s really worth watching for fans of Griffey, or fans of dogs. If you want to skip to the climax, this tweet’s got you covered.
Eikan Nine Crossroad coming to consoles
Konami has quietly snuck in some news about Eikan Nine Crossroad, while we’re just a week away from the release of the big new Pawapuro game. Eikan Nine is their free-to-play high school management spin-off, which was always announced as mobile-first, consoles-later. Well, the console versions will come out for PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch on July 17th, just the day before Pawapuro.
The word of mouth has not been great on this game, though the same-named mode in the full title is widely beloved.
Pawapuro and Ohtani on Famitsu
The age-old weekly gaming magazine Famitsu will feature Powerful Pro Yakyuu 2024-2025 and Shohei Ohtani on its cover next week. Here’s what the cover looks like:
YouTube Viewing Guide
- I’ve somehow neglected to mention Foolish Baseball’s playthrough of Out of the Park Baseball 24 until now. If you already know a lot about OOTP, you might tear your hair out at some of the decisions early on, but it’s still a fun and lightweight series of videos. Foolish Bailey takes over the Athletics in 2024, and after some long, painful (in-game) years he’s reached the World Series just this past week. Fun to watch.
- ESPN Sports Connection (Wii U) Gameplay – In my most technically-complicated recording yet, I showed off some footage of basically the only Wii U baseball game, a multi-sport collection from Ubisoft. I had a second camera record the Wii U tablet to show off the unique pitching mechanic.
- Jikkyou Powerful Pro Yakyuu 2001 (PS1) CPU vs. CPU Gameplay – Good way to see how far the series has come in preparation for next week. I love the menu music in the old Konami N64 and PS1 games so much.
