A growing compendium of roster mods
For a long time, I’ve wanted to keep a central list of team/league/roster mods for baseball games somewhere. So I’ve started a page on the encyclopedia part of the site for just that here.
They’re not super easy to find, and sometimes hidden behind weird eBay paywalls, but roster modding is alive and well across lots of different baseball video games, from R.B.I. to Super Mega Baseball. Playing old games is fun, and playing with new players is fun, so it’s a natural combo.
This was inspired by Baron von Lector commenting on my YouTube channel recently, which led me to rediscover his great work across several 8- and 16-bit games. Then MVPMods is an endless treasure trove also, built around MVP Baseball 2005 initially but with plenty of work for other games too.
Definitely leave a comment if you have another great source for these mods that can be added to the list.
Aaron vs. Ruth review for SABR
I’ve been proud to start working with the Society for American Baseball Research Games and Simulations Committee recently. The first bits of that work are showing up now, with a new review I wrote for Aaron vs. Ruth: Battle of the Big Bats, and links to my videos starting to appear on their Game Playthrough Vids page.
YouTube Viewing Guide
- MLB The Show 24 (PS5) Derek Jeter Storylines Gameplay – Here’s everything currently available in the Derek Jeter part of the new The Show‘s Storylines mode, with my failed attempts edited out. Jeter isn’t a great interview, but the video content for this mode was pretty slick nevertheless, and the fielding-specific moments were a nice touch, if maybe a little too quick and easy.
- Jikkyou Powerful Pro Yakyuu 8 (PS2) Gameplay – It’s been weirdly difficult to track down cheap copies of the first two Pawapuro games for PS2 (7 and 8), but I finally got 8 in recently and enjoyed it.
- Mezase! Meimon Yakyuubu (PS1) Gameplay – A high school baseball team management game that’s truly focused on the stuff off the diamond. Lots of decisions to make around training schedules and recruiting middle schoolers, and decision-making in-game is almost non-existent. Warning: This makes for a very dry video full of numbers and menus if you can’t read Japanese.
