Namco ventured into a more realistic style of baseball game for the first time with Necchuu! Pro Yakyuu 2002, an arcade and PlayStation 2 title set in NPB.
The game's title is licensed from Fuji Television's baseball broadcasts, which from 2002-2004 were titled "Necchuu! Pro Yakyuu." The first word in the title is a portmanteau of the word for heat/fever and the word for broadcast or relay.

Description
This is the first realistic-styled game developed by Namco, released one year after the cartoon-styled World Stadium 5 for the original PlayStation. Masaharu Miyake provided play-by-play commentary.
Gameplay modes:
- Pennant - Play through one season as an NPB team. The season length is configurable at 5, 15, 30, 70, or a real 140 game length.
- Open - A single-game exhibition mode. Single-player, two-player, or CPU vs. CPU options are available.
- Training - A mode allowing repeated practice in a scenario you set, or a guided tutorial.
- Asunaro - A single-season create-a-player mode with missions and ability improvement mechanics. The title means something like "grow into tomorrow."
- Trade - Edit rosters for use in the other modes. Players created in Asunaro mode are available.
- Highlight - Results and highlights can be saved from matches in the Pennant and Open modes.
