Description
Metalhead Software (an independent studio based in British Columbia) developed and published Super Mega Baseball, a download-only title with no physical release. The developers openly aimed to fill a hole in the U.S. sports game market, offering a faster-paced but still grounded and simulation-focused alternative to MLB The Show.
The game’s initial release came on PS3 and PS4, where purchasing the game on either platform would entitle your PlayStation Network account to the game on both platforms. In 2015, the game was released on Xbox One and PC as Super Mega Baseball: Extra Innings, with two additional stadiums. These stadiums would be released in September 2015 as free DLC for owners of the PlayStation version of the game.
Two to four players can cooperate or compete in local multiplayer. Players, team names, and uniforms can be customized.
Super Mega Baseball was successful enough to start a new series, with Super Mega Baseball 2 releasing in 2018 and Super Mega Baseball 3 in 2020. EA Sports would acquire Metalhead Software in May 2021, with rumors of another Super Mega Baseball game under the Electronic Arts umbrella coming in 2023.
